Today we finished our series on Breaking Bad Habits by considering the rebuilding of the wall around Jerusalem in the book of Nehemiah. Just like a city with broken down walls we are vulnerable and open to attack when we allow bad habits to rule us, which is what happens if we don’t deal with them.
We see Nehemiah praying and seeking God’s plan for restoring the walls. We need to pray, we need to ask God what and how we are to change our bad habits and instead build good ones in our lives. Sometimes we see a superficial behaviour but God wants us to deal with a deeper attitude of heart.
When we try to break bad habits, at times we will face opposition just like the people rebuilding the wall did. As we change it affects the dynamic of relationships and people around us have to respond differently to us which means they have to change too.
We need to build support around us and use the weapons God gives us to fight our bad habits, particularly when we are discouraged or finding it too hard. Above all we need to remember just like Nehemiah reminded the people as they rebuilt, that our God is great and awesome.
