This week we continued to look at our theme for the year -Thrive. In 3 John 2 John prays for his friend Gaius. Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
John wants Gaius to thrive in every area of his life. He prays for good health for him so that Gaius is equipped to carry out God’s will. Even if we are in poor health we can still thrive if we seek God and do what He says. But we should be diligent to pray for ourselves and others that God protects us from illness. John prayed for Gaius’ material well-being. We see in the letter that Gaius was generous, helping visiting preachers. God gives us resources so that we can use them to further His kingdom. What matters is not how much we have but how we use it for God. Thirdly John mentions how he has heard that Gaius is faithful to the truth of the gospel. He knows God and walks in His ways. That is what we need to do to thrive. Just as John wants Gaius to thrive in every way so is that God’s heart for us. We will do so as we keep close to Him and seek His will in every area of our life.
This morning we announced our theme for 2019! As we were praying at the end of last year about what God was calling us to focus on we felt that God is calling us to 'thrive' as a church in 2019!
This idea is drawn from 3 John verse 2 when John writes to Gaius,
"I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers."
As a society we have such a focus on our physical bodies! But the Bible teaches us that we should take much more care to focus on putting the right things in place to ensure our souls thrive!
Over the coming year this will be our focus as a church! Listen along to the brief message as we introduced the theme and saw that it is important that we learn to place value on our souls and that the place we thrive is inside God's calling for us!
One of the questions that came in as part of our 'You Asked For It' - was how do we deal with a fear of failure?
At some point in our lives all of us experience the fear of failure as we prepare to step into something new! For some of us this fear can be crippling and can prevent us from entering into God's promises for us!
When we look at scripture we see that this is not a new problem unique only to us today! Instead, we see in Numbers 13 that the Israelites were so afraid of failure when they stood on the edge of the promised land that the fear eclipsed their faith in God's promise to them!
When we jump ahead 40 years to Joshua 1 - we see God's message to Joshua as he stands ready to lead the Israelites into the promised land. God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous! God will be faithful if we trust in Him and are courageous to step into His calling and promises!
Listen along for some practical tips on overcoming a fear of failure!
